Remove objects from a photo with the Remove tool

With the new "Remove" tool, unwanted objects can be removed quickly and simply with one click in Photoshop. Thanks to AI-based technology, this new tool already works perfectly. Even with the most complicated objects, the tool manages to fill areas without problems and only in rare cases do blurs or artifacts appear. Especially for Photoshop beginners, this tool is ideal for quickly retouching an image. The Remove tool is located in the left toolbar. If it doesn't appear automatically, click on the image retouching and repair tools group and hold down the mouse button to select the Remove tool.

To remove an unwanted object from your image, first determine the size of your brush, so you have a size that will cover the entire object in one stroke. Now drag the Healing Brush over the area you want to remove from the image and select "Apply" to remove the object. If the object you're removing is more complex than expected, you can also turn on the “Remove after each stroke” setting for more precise brush strokes.

Touch up images with the Clone Stamp tool

The “Clone Stamp” is a popular tool for image retouching. After selecting the stamp in the left toolbar, you must first define the area of ​​the image to be copied and then place it on the selected area. To define the starting point from which to copy, hold down “Alt” on the keyboard and left-click the area to copy. When making your selection, make sure that the area to copy and the area to paste match as closely as possible. Too much difference in brightness or texture makes retouching less accurate.

In our example image we want to delete the lighthouse from the photo with the help of the Clone Stamp. To do it using this tool, we have to use in this case two different points to copy. To cover the bottom part of the lighthouse let's use the dunes and the sea as a starting point to copy. For the upper part we instead use the sky as a source. In order for the retouching to be as believable as possible, it must be done carefully. The size of the stamp varies depending on the scenario to be copied and pasted, but it is always advisable not to choose one that is too large. As is often the case with image editing, patience and great attention to detail lead to the desired result.

For retouching, we use the Clone Stamp by clicking on Alt + left mouse button to copy parts of the surrounding image and cover the lighthouse step by step. In our example, the original layer has been duplicated (Ctrl + j) to make it easier to edit and the retouching then takes place on the new layer. Once finished, the two layers are superimposed and reduced to a single layer.

Retouching images with “Content-Aware Fill”

Content-Aware Fill is another interesting method to make unwanted components in the image disappear. To do this, you must first determine the area of ​​the image to fill. Then select a selection tool of your choice, such as the lasso tool, and narrow down the part of the image you want to retouch. When making your selection, also take into account the shadows cast by the object in question, otherwise the retouching will catch your eye.

In the example image, the hot air balloon just adjacent to the hat and covering the mountainous landscape is chosen. First, the balloon is circled with the lasso tool. Subsequently the area is filled by clicking on the menu item "Edit" and then "Fill selection"

A 'Fill Layer' dialog will now appear, select 'Content Aware', 'Normal' mode and 100% opacity. Then confirm by clicking on “OK”.

This process may take some time depending on the size of the area to fill and the power of your computer. If the result doesn't convince you, you can repeat the process with a different selection or enhance the areas around the selection with the previously described tools.

Content-aware navigation with Photoshop

If an image component bothers you but you don't want to remove it completely from the image, Photoshop gives you the option to move it according to the content. With this tool you can adjust the composition of the images as you prefer. First, select the area or object to move. Regardless of the surrounding background, you need to make sure the object is selected or marked directly on the outlines. The best way to do this is by using the Brush.

Then click on the symbol positioned between the Eyedropper and the Brush and select the two intersecting arrows. By pressing the left mouse button, you can now move the selected area within the image.

Once you find a suitable position for your selection, release the left mouse button and the action will be activated. The selected area will thus be repositioned and the previous position will be retouched automatically. When you reposition an object, you need to keep in mind the viewing angle and relationship to other parts of the image. Improper repositioning can create unrealistic proportions and thus show the retouching.

Again, the results of Content-Aware Navigation may not be perfect. If necessary, retouch the image using the Clone Stamp or the Remove tool.
